Stoney Nakoda AV Club

The Nakoda Audio Visual Club is a youth-run production society that provides film and arts support to its members. This support also includes helping out with all aspects of production, making art, exhibiting, showcasing, and sharing their works. The Club promotes art in Nakoda communities and collaborates with other artists to help young people get professional training. They achieve that by hosting skill-building workshops for children and youth. The Nakoda AV Club is also a collective, formed by a group of people who gather to support each other’s artistic endeavors, without the intrusion of politics, negativity or conflicts. Its members believe in the ability of people to accomplish their goals, no matter what they may be, through hard work, dedication, and the support of kin who care.
Their aim is to raise interest in storytelling and art as a modern form of the ancient Nakoda storytelling tradition, in order to strengthen local culture for Nakoda youth. The collective believes that art is a means for youth to gain wellness and communication skills, which will help them to be successful in all aspects of their lives. The Nakoda AV Club hopes that by watching films about and by Indigenous people, their community will be able to see its own successes and strengths reflected on the screen. They believe in the power of storytelling, and its transformative capacity to change human lives.

Le Club Audiovisuel Nakoda est une société de production gérée par des jeunes qui fournit un soutien cinématographique et artistique à tous ses membres. En plus d’aider sur tous les aspects de la production, y compris la création artistique, les expositions, la présentation et le partage, il fait la promotion des arts dans les communautés Nakoda lors d’événements. Le club travaille avec d’autres artistes de la région pour aider les jeunes à obtenir une formation professionnelle et favoriser le renforcement des compétences à travers des ateliers destinés aux enfants et aux jeunes adultes. Le Club Audiovisuel Nakoda est un collectif, un groupe de personnes qui se rassemblent pour se soutenir mutuellement dans leurs efforts artistiques, à l’abri de la politique, de la négativité ou des conflits. Leur objectif est de susciter l’intérêt pour la narration et l’art en tant que formes modernes de l’ancienne tradition orale Nakoda, et de l’utiliser pour soutenir le renforcement de la culture locale pour les jeunes Nakoda. Cobra Collins
Cobra Collins (She/Her) is a Mixed Indigenous and Métis poet of significant height, from Grande Prairie in Treaty 8, Cobra is currently based in Mohkinstsis (Calgary) – Treaty 7 Territory.
Cobra was the captain and coach of Calgary’s 2015 and 2016 Slam team, representing our city on a national level at the Canadian Festival of Spoken Word and was a member of Calgary’s Inkspot Spoken Word Collective, home of Calgary’s official poetry Slam.
Cobra has participated in several Nationwide Spoken Word festivals, as well as collaborated with artists of different backgrounds for dance (Fluid Movements Arts Festival) and performance festivals (IKG 1 ! Live Performance Festival). Cobra was honoured to be shortlisted as a nominee for Calgary’s 2016 and 2018 poet laureate. Above all things, Cobra truly believes that our words can change us.

Cobra Collins est une poétesse d’origines autochtone et métisse d’une taille considérable, originaire de Grande Prairie, Treaty 8. Elle vit à Mohkinstsis (Calgary) – Territoire du Treaty 7.
Cobra a été la capitaine et entraîneuse de l’équipe de slam de Calgary en 2015 et 2016, menant l’équipe au niveau national du Canadian Festival of Spoken Word.

Cobra a participé à plusieurs festivals de spoken word à l’échelle nationale. Drawn from the artist’s true-life story, RKLSS is a personal film of how art and exposure to traditional teachings saved his life after being subject to beatings, torture and prolonged involuntary segregation in a maximum-security facility as a young offender. Dedicated to the memory of Yvan Blanchette and Trevor Spooner.
Tiré d’une histoire vécue par l’artiste, RKLSS est un film personnel sur la façon dont l’art et l’exposition aux enseignements traditionnels lui ont sauvé la vie après avoir été battu, soumis à la torture et à un isolement involontaire prolongé dans un établissement à sécurité maximale en tant que jeune contrevenant. Tank Standing Buffalo (Potowatami/Mixed/Black) is an accomplished animator based in Calgary working on numerous self-directed and commissioned projects. RKLSS,a deeply personal project, premiered at the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival.
Sammy Jean (also known as Adu Darko): Musician, vocalist, composer
Sammy Jean/Adu Darko is a composer and a musician. Her powerful voice reminiscent of old 1960’s soul stars carries from inside to the outside of the venue, drawing in even bigger audiences. Noted for her distinct vocal sound, this Calgary born singer is also a burgeoning song writer. Sammy performs acoustically or alongside her backup band, The Samsonites, which comprises a few of Calgary’s rising musical talents. A distinct sound influenced by her old Kingston town roots, Sammy finds inspiration in Reggae, Ska, old school Soul, Jazz and Motown whilst managing to maintain her individuality in the arrangements she composes.
Brandon Smith: Sound engineer, musician
Brandon Smith is a Calgary based musician, synth programmer and avid student of keyboard history. His love of vintage equipment and history eventually led him to work for the National Music Centre in Calgary, where he demonstrates many of their instruments and artifacts (including a world class collection of synthesizers) for the public.

Sammy Jean (également connu sous le nom d’Adu Darko)

Sammy Jean/Adu Darko est compositrice et musicienne. Sa voix puissante qui rappelle les vieilles stars de la soul des années 1960 émane vers l’extérieur de la salle, attirant un public encore plus large. Remarquée pour sa sonorité vocale distincte, cette chanteuse née à Calgary est également une compositrice en plein essor. Sammy se produit en acoustique ou aux côtés de son groupe d’accompagnement, The Samsonites, qui comprend quelques-uns des talents musicaux émergents de Calgary. The tragic loss of familial history, culture, and traditional community ties. Through symbolism, this is a story of harrowing fractures through time, all the while honouring the legacy of an Métis Elder.

p.a.duquette is a multidisciplinary artist with a long career in the performing arts that expanded to include live action film, media art, visual art and immersive interactive artworks. In addition to co-founding arts and social justice festivals patricia has written, produced, directed, coordinated, and performed in countless productions over the course of more than three decades. This project, created in honour of her matrilineal ancestry, marks her first foray into animated film.

Ce projet, créé en l’honneur de son ascendance matrilinéaire, marque sa première incursion dans le cinéma d’animation.
Stephen Gladue, Digital Animator, Collaborator
Born and raised on the Fishing Lake Métis Settlement, Stephen Gladue is a talented artist residing in beautiful Vancouver, British Columbia who specializes in animation and visual effects for film, television and games. Classically and technically trained at some of the best art schools in Canada, Stephen has made it his career’s mission to contribute to the advancement of Aboriginal production. Not only to be part of it but to be a driving force behind it. As such he has become one of Western Canada’s most sought after Indigenous content creators.
Stephen sharpened his base skill sets at the VancouverFilm School where he developed a comprehensive understanding of classical animation. Later devoting time to his technical skills in the 3D Animation, Art and Design Program at the Art Institute of Vancouver. Between vocations Stephen took part in the Aboriginal Film Production Program at Capilano College, only to be asked to return, this time as a guest lecturer. Since then, Stephen has been a guest lecturer and provided instruction to hundreds of children when not holding key creative positions in between television projects.
His work has been profiled by the CBC, Graffiti Arts magazines and a variety of other print and digital publications.
SkyBlue Mary Morin
SkyBlue Morin has spoken Michif Cree & Ile-a-la Crosse Michif since childhood. As a Michif Cree & Ile-a-la Crosse Michif language practitioner, she had developed Michif Cree language handbooks and conducted workshops for the Metis Nation of Alberta. As a Michif Cree Language translator, she has developed and recorded a Michif Cree APP (application) through the Metis Nation of Alberta Region 3.
SkyBlue has also done audio Michif Cree translations on video for various companies including APTN.
In March 2020, SkyBlue Morin initiated recording Michif Cree videos that provided written translation in Michif Cree and English in her Michif Cree Language group on Facebook.

Stephen Gladue

Né et élevé dans l’établissement métis de Fishing Lake, Stephen Gladue est un artiste qui vit dans la belle ville de Vancouver, en Colombie-Britannique, et qui est spécialisé dans l’animation et les effets visuels pour le cinéma, la télévision et les jeux. Formé de façon classique et technique dans certaines des meilleures écoles d’art au Canada, Stephen s’est donné comme mission de contribuer à l’essor de la production autochtone, non seulement pour en faire partie, mais pour en être une force motrice. À ce titre, il est devenu l’un des créateurs de contenu autochtone les plus réputés de l’Ouest canadien.
Stephen a amélioré ses compétences de base en étudiant à l’école de cinéma de Vancouver où il a développé une compréhension globale de l’animation. Plus tard, il a peaufiné ses compétences techniques dans le programme d’animation 3D, d’art et de design de l’Art Institute of Vancouver. Entre ses deux diplômes, il a participé au programme de production de films autochtones au Capilano College, pour ensuite y revenir, mais cette fois en tant que conférencier invité. Depuis qu’il est conférencier invité il a enseigné à des centaines d’enfants, a participé à des projets télévisuels et occupé des postes créatifs importants.
Son travail a été présenté par la CBC, le magazine Graffiti Arts et nombre d’autres publications imprimées et numériques.
SkyBlue Mary Morin
SkyBlue Morin parle le cri michif et le michif de l’Ile-à-la-Crosse depuis son enfance. En tant que praticienne des langues michif crie et de l’Ile-à-la-Crosse, elle a élaboré des manuels de langue michif crie et animé des ateliers pour la Métis Nation of Alberta. En tant que traductrice de la langue michif crie, elle a développé et enregistré une application michif crie par l’intermédiaire de la Métis Nation of Alberta Region 3.
Wesakechak and the Chickadees / WESAKECHAK ET LES MÉSANGES

“Wesakechak and the Chickadees” is a playful, cut-out version of a classic traditional story. Some chickadees show Wesakechak how to make his eyes fly out of his head, and Wesakechak ignores their warnings to not do it too many times, or his eyes won’t come back. Amy and Colton’s take on this story shows the duo’s renowned sense of humor, and playful style.
« Wesakechal et les mésanges » est une version ludique et écourtée d’une histoire traditionnelle. Des mésanges montrent à Wesakechak comment faire voler ses yeux hors de sa tête, et Wesakechak ignore leur avertissement de ne pas le faire trop de fois, sinon ses yeux ne reviendront pas. La version que donnent Amy et Colton de cette histoire laisse transparaître leur style espiègle et leur sens de l’humour.

Amy Willier (Jan 22, 2021) spent her life under the tutelage of her mother, Yvonne Jobin, learning how to tan hides, do beadwork, quillwork, tufting, and many other ancient art forms. Amy brought traditional art into the future with her artistic creativity and gifts as an instructor. She specialized in beadwork, leatherwork, painting and fish scale art. Amy loved to share her culture with others and was a generous and loving teacher, working alongside her mother and cousins at Moonstone Creation.
Moonstone Creation is a truly authentic Indigenous art gallery, where the majority of the items are made right on location. The gallery opened in 2009 with just a handful of artists and now represents over 100 Indigenous artists, primarily from Western Canada, and is located in Inglewood, in Calgary.
Colton Willier, Director & Artist
Colton is a 12-year-old Cree & Blackfoot First Nations artist. Colton wrote, directed, and animated “Wesakechak and the Chickadees” with his mom Amy Willier. The two also made “Skateboarding Pants”, and “Shirtnami”, and created the soundtrack music. Being raised in Moonstone Creation, a Calgary gallery owned by his Kokum (grandmother), Colton has literally grown up surrounded by Native contemporary and traditional art. Colton is always drawing and makes animated movies in his spare time using Lego, clay, drawings, or toys.

Amy a passé sa vie sous la tutelle de sa mère, Yvonne Jobin, à apprendre à tanner les peaux, à faire du perlage, du piquant, du touffetage et de nombreuses autres formes d’art anciennes. Amy fait entrer l’art traditionnel dans le futur avec sa créativité artistique. Elle se spécialise dans le perlage, le travail du cuir, la peinture et l’art des écailles de poisson. Amy aime partager sa culture avec les autres et est une enseignante généreuse et aimante.
Moonstone Creation est une galerie d’art authentique aborigène, où la majorité des objets sont fabriqués sur place. La galerie a ouvert ses portes en 2009 avec une poignée d’artistes et représente aujourd’hui plus d’une cinquantaine d’artistes autochtones, principalement de l’Ouest canadien. La passion d’Amy est d’inspirer d’autres artistes, d’enseigner aux gens la valeur des formes d’art traditionnelles et de continuer à créer elle-même de l’art authentique.
Bio de Colton Willier
Réalisateur & Artiste
Colton est un artiste de 13 ans issu des Premières Nations crie et pieds-noirs. Colton a écrit, réalisé et animé « Skateboarding Pants » et « Shirtnami », et a créé la musique de la bande originale avec sa mère, Amy Willier. Ayant grandi à Moonstone Creation, une galerie de Calgary appartenant à sa Kokum (grand-mère) et à sa mère, Colton a donc grandi entouré d’art autochtone contemporain et traditionnel.
Colton dessine assidument et réalise des films d’animation pendant son temps libre en utilisant des Lego, de l’argile, des dessins ou des jouets. Colton et sa mère ont assisté à des projections de ses films à ImagineNative à Toronto et Maoriland en Nouvelle-Zélande avec le soutien de CAOS. Le duo a rencontré d’autres réalisateurs, acteurs et producteurs autochtones au ImagineNative Film Festival et espère qu’ils pourront continuer à trouver un public pour leurs films.

Calgary Animated Objects Society is based in the city of Calgary, also known as Moh-kins-tsis (“Elbow” in Blackfoot), Winsheesh-pah (“Elbow” in Stoney), Otos-kwunee (“Elbow” in Cree), Kootsisaw (“Elbow” in T’suu T’ina), and Klincho-tinay-indihay (“Horse Town” in Slavey). The Elbow River gets its name from the distinctive “crook” as it flows towards the Bow River, which gets its name from the reeds used in bow making that grew along its banks.
